What makes a survival start worth keeping

The first night decides a lot. Before dark you want wood, some food and a bed, and a village gives you all three in one place. Its farms hand you crops and seeds to replant, and its houses have beds you can break and carry off. Take one bed and leave the rest, though. A villager only breeds when there is a free bed, so every bed you take is one the village can no longer grow into.

A ruined portal close to spawn is the other early prize. In Java 26.2 its chest rolls four to eight times on a gold-heavy loot list. That works out to a 46 percent chance of flint and steel, the same chance of some obsidian, a golden apple in about one chest out of five and an enchanted golden apple in 1.5 percent of them. Since 1.21.5, two chests in three also hold a lodestone or two. A frame lights with ten obsidian, since the four corners can stay empty, but any crying obsidian in it has to be swapped out first.

Since 1.18 every ore has its own heights. Iron has a small peak around Y=16 and a far bigger one inside mountains: above Y=80 the game tries to place it 90 times per chunk, most often around Y=232, so on a mountain start the iron for a full set of gear is sitting in the cliff faces around you. Emerald ore only forms in mountain biomes and windswept hills.

Diamonds work the other way. They get more common the deeper you dig, all the way down to the bedrock, and they avoid air. One of the four batches of diamond ore never generates next to an air block, and the other three lose half or more of the blocks that would touch one. Water and lava don't count, so the walls of an underground lake are a better bet than an open ravine.

Check the edition and the version before you trust a seed's coordinates. Java and Bedrock build the same terrain and biomes from the same seed, but structures, trees and other decorations end up in different places, so a village at spawn in Java can be missing in Bedrock. When an update changes world generation, an old seed stops making the same world, and in an existing save only the chunks generated after the update look different.

Never entered a seed before? How to use Minecraft seeds covers both editions.

Questions about survival seeds

What is the best Y level for diamonds?

As deep as you can go. Diamond ore gets more common all the way down, and bedrock can show up anywhere from Y=-64 to Y=-60, so Y=-59 is the lowest level that is always clear of it. Dig a two block high tunnel with its floor there and branch off with side tunnels that leave two blocks of stone between them, and you see every block without mining it all. Check along lava and water as you go, because diamond ore generates next to them as often as anywhere else.

Where is iron easiest to find?

In the mountains. Above Y=80 the game tries to place iron ore 90 times per chunk, peaking around Y=232, so peaks and cliff faces are full of it. Underground the best height is around Y=16. An iron golem drops three to five iron ingots, and a ruined portal chest often has a stack of 9 to 18 iron nuggets.

Does a seed make the same world in Java and Bedrock?

The terrain and the biomes match, so mountains, rivers and coastlines sit in the same places. Structures, trees and other decorations don't, and neither do the ravines and caves made by carvers. A seed listed for one edition can still give you a good start in the other, but the villages and temples on its page may not be there.

Why isn't my spawn in the biome the seed page lists?

First check that your version and edition match the seed, because a different generator gives different terrain. If they do, look at the spawn itself. The game picks the world spawn with a search that avoids oceans, rivers and extreme climates, and Java then drops a new player on a random solid block within 21 by 21 blocks of that point, Bedrock within 10 by 10. That can be enough to start just across a biome border.

How do I change where I respawn?

Sleep in a bed. In the Nether a respawn anchor does the same job, but it doesn't work in the Overworld. If the bed is gone or blocked when you die, you go back to the world spawn. That spot, where new players arrive too, only moves with the /setworldspawn command.
